Larkin Poe -- just got turned onto them. Seeing them live in April in Grass Valley (foothills above Sacramento). They're good and they are easy on the eyes too:

What does a cup of coffee, a random train ride and an older session working guitar player have to do with one of rock's biggest bands of the 80's? This one is pretty epic.
Back in the 70's a bass player and his drummer, who would go on to be huge rock stars, were making some cash doing studio work. At the studio where they were laying down tracks, the top studio guitar player in their area walked in to do some work on another project. The guys were very impressed to be around the talented player. Even though he was about 10 years older, they seemed to hit it off. But fate had other plans and the meet up seemed destined to be just a one off meeting. That was when the drummer ran into the guitar player getting off a train. The guitar player suggested they get some coffee and after getting their brews, they sat down to talk music. The guitar player complemented the group's sound and then said, "You and that bass player have something special, but you need me in your band, and I accept." And thus was born one of the biggest bands of the 80's, You probably have figured out that the band is the Police and the guitar player was none other than Andy Summers who would partner up with Sting and Stuart Copeland to produce 6 albums on their way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sometimes you have a plan, other times fate steps in.

Personally, I am far more impressed with Copeland than either of the other two, but I have never thought Sting's bass playing was anything special.

Here's a crazy story for you all. How is a guy from Brooklyn, Elvis and an country song all connected? Here is how you connect the dots.
He was born in Brooklyn, raised in New Jersey but always had a soft spot for country music, so he moved to Nashville. He was having some moderate early success as a song writer, but his big break came when Elvis heard one of his demos of a song he had written. So Elvis recorded Kentucky Rain which was a huge hit for him later in his career. Of course this spawned a feeding frenzy for his songs, and country artists were lining up to do his stuff. Ronnie Milsap had a big hit with one of his songs. So the writer scored his own recording deal and he enjoyed a good number of hits on the country charts, twenty to be exact. But he started noticing his stuff was crossing over to the pop charts. He ended up having four top ten hits on the pop charts. Sadly, he would die at the age of 56 of lung cancer. Eddie was a long time smoker and he now lies at rest not 4 miles from my home. You probably know by now I am talking about the legendary Eddie Rabbitt. Eddie's music is still on the radio and you can even find his music in a few big Hollywood hit movies including Every Which Way But Loose. Eddie even got a few bit parts himself on a couple soap operas.
So from 1980, here is Eddie Rabbitt with his biggest crossover hit, I Love A Rainy Night. Seems fitting as I am about to get a bit of weather around here.

I spent most of the day flattening the irons of 3 new planes. It's hard, tiresome work. After a hot shower and sitting down with a large pour of Wild Turkey Rare Breed, I'm chillin' to some Pink Floyd live at Pompeii.
