Seattle didn’t want to overpay which led to the trade. They wanted to re-sign him, but not for what we will be giving him. If we weren’t going to give him more money he would have stayed, but been disgruntled.
I think Seattle are also starting a rebuild.
Lockette and Metcalfe both about to leave.
They probably see Darnold as a QB for 5+ years, but Smith as 3 years max.
Simply because Pete Carroll trusts him to run his offense, so we see if it happens or not.
That, in no way answers my question. Why should we unnecessarily overpay AND overextend Geno NOW, beyond his CURRENT 1 year contract?
Also, the deals/drafts are ultimately made by Spytek, not Carroll. I doubt Spytek would risk his job on a move just because it may elate Carroll.

I can’t help but believe Jeanty is the pick at six now. Seeing they have Smith at QB now, and how Carroll loves to run the football, Jeanty would be the logical choice, imo.
I watched every college game he played (WVU fan), so could give some anecdotal insight I reckon. He was on the team with Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin, throwing bombs under Dana Hologorsen (pos) in an air raid scheme. Throws a beautiful ball, strong arm. Not a "running" qb, but definitely not a statue/AOC - and did take off a lot when given the opportunity (kinda like mahommes does, but of course not on his talent level).
Was immature when he came out -supposed to be a first round pick, then acted like a douche in the green room when he wasn't picked in the first..had that incident when right before he was going to be the starter on the jets one of their lineman broke his jaw because he told him something like youll get you money when i f[raiders_icon]cking feel like it or whatever because he owed him a couple hundred dollars or something stupid. But, I understand he matured a lot since then, and since found success at seattle.
Never really kept up with him/watched very many of his games because he wasn't on the raiders, but I'm sure he is still a helluva passer/better at processing, but probably a bit slower scrambling, and will be a solid vet/bridge qb while our rookie develops.
Can anyone who is either happy or riding the fence concerning this move please explain why in hell we would give up a 3rd AND give him a new contract that is reported to be a considerable bump in salary, guaranteed money, and years?
He already had a contract for 2025 so why not wait and see how he does this season and IF after a few games he shows that he's the real deal, well, you can always extend him then...and if he shits the bed we can let him walk at the end of the season. I can't see any reasoning to extend him NOW, before he's even taken a snap.
I think this is simply a function of we have to overpay for players. This hasn't been a sought after stop for players in forty years. As such it's not like players are beating down our door to get in here not. As far as trades a lot of teams will use whatever they can because they know we are desperate.
The Raiders mean nothing in the current NFL landscape. And until that changes we have to operate differently.
Personally I don't see this as an over or under pay. We used one of our 3rds, if our QB play bumps upwards this year its a small price to pay.
You also seem to be getting hung up on the contract. While we might sign him for 5 it's likely there is an out for years 3-5 making it in essence a 2-year contract.

Lots of fans on other boards are all wondering the same thing.

Don’t believe anyone expressing their opinion, either way, would classify them as a moron.
The Seahawks didn’t believe Smith was worth $40M+, the Raiders seemingly do. That doesn’t make either team moronic (yet), nor any fan who agrees with one side over the other. Seems like we can do without the insults while expressing an opinion on something that won’t be settled for a year, at the very least.
Exactly. This was a smart move. Adding a mid quality starting veteran QB for a late 3rd (92) is a good deal in today's NFL. What veteran QB did anyone think the Raiders were going to get after Stafford stayed in LA? This is far better than Russ, Fields, Rodgers, Jameis, Zach Wilson, etc. Sorry guys, Mahomes wasn't available. This allows the Raiders to win a number of games while continuing to address the future of the position. Smith is probably the best QB here since Gannon.
And I I think Darnold stays in Minn too.
After sleeping on this I’m still in the same position regarding the trade: let’s see what develops.
I don’t hate him nor am I super enthused.
Right now this is a single; opening move in what the 2025 Raiders will be. It will be interesting to see where we go from here.
I also have to wonder if this means we are going with Jeanty in the first. Note I didn’t say at #6, I said in the first round.
If Jeanty is still there at #6, we should pounce on him. I we don't greatly improve our RB room for this season, Geno or any other QB for that matter will likely have a very hard time improving our offense.

People that think the Earth is flat are morons but it's their opinion, they are still morons. People that think we had a ton of QB options to choose from, morons,. People that think PC wanted to go into the draft with possible 1 QB option on staff, morons. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk
So according to you, Geno plus a 3rd is not only a "fair value", but getting an inexplicable $15-$20 Mil raise is also a "fair value". (rolls eyes)
"a statement is not an opinion"...so according to your own definition, that's a "lie".
That was over a week ago & you’re still butthurt cause i called out your lie
So i’ll start this then Geno ranks in the mid to upper range mark on mist list & the price for QB around that mark is in the 40-45 mil range
In fact trading a 3rd for a starting NFL QB is something that mostly never happens so i might by understanding how good of a deal it is, you do understand that Smith is will be getting a new contract so his salary now doesn't matter
You told actually stated that Sanders was a trouble maker & a problem when where were no facts to state that which is a lie
There is a difference that i’m using actual evidence that is out there, you just didn't like someone & made shit up
Not the most exciting pick but a needed addition to the QB room.
I agree that he's better than what we've had over the past two seasons ....
but it needs to be asked ... (it will be anyway)
Is Geno Smith better than Derek Carr? I hope so.
