Sorry man this is not reality. At all.
How much of Carr's 125 million did he make?
The answer is 125 million (Cap hit which is what matters). Go add up the numbers, 125 million.
Not all incentives count against the cap.
I don’t care about carrs current contract
The fact Carr has never won a playoff game or much of anything at all, you can load that contract up with incentives that are not likely to be earned (since it’s based on past results) and you’ve boosted the value without hitting the cap. That’s why it takes weeks to negotiate contracts and it’s not just cut and dry like everyone on here tries to make it. There’s ways to make the numbers work. Teams with far less headroom do it all the time.
If you don’t want to pay Carr, fine. But we cannot sit here and pretend there’s no way to make a 40 mil back loaded and incentive driven contract work.

But we cannot sit here and pretend there’s no way to make a 40 mil back loaded and incentive driven contract work.
I doubt you'll be able to find any contract for a QB who's the unquestioned starter that has incentives making up that big a chunk of it - especially not likely to be earned incentives (which do hit the cap, just in the year after they are earned). The most incentive-laden contract for a QB in the NFL I've ever seen is Brady's, and I think it's pretty clear that he's given up money every year in order to win. Even with all the incentives in his contract, Brady never had that much of his deal in incentives.
Most of the value of QB contracts is real, and hits the cap. Prescott, for example, has a $40 million annual deal with a $1 million bonus for winning the SB.

The player does not merit 40 million, you act like this fella is a hair short of Mahomes in deliverables and the production isn't on the same planet.
Work to do what? Set up for a Superbowl run? Surely you jest!

I take back what I said both Jimmy G and Derek Carr, while both are game managers they are quite the opposite. Derek Carr can throw dimes at times and is fast enough to get 3-4 yards here and there. From a physical aspect, he is top 10. Now for a mental aspect, Derek is a lower tier QB, maybe 26. He does not have good reads, situational football is bad, and throwing footballs away in redzone are no nos. Jimmy G plays on a ultra talented team with future HOFers, Kittle, Williams, and maybe Samuel. Jimmy G does not have to do much to win. he just has to make a few pass here and there/ Jimmg G has a very extensive injury history and really can't be counted to be healthy for a full season season after season. What he is is mentally tough, he will play injured and the 49ers players will go though a brick wall for him. If you depends on Jimmg G to pass the ball with consistanency you will be disappointed. He is at least bottom tier to back up material. When I see the Rams with Jared Goff and Matt Stafford, you see Jared Goff being exposed as a QB with the Lions with 2 wins while Matt Stafford wins a Superbowl with the Rams which Jared couldn't Matt is an above game manager.
Franchise tag is more expensive
As stated earlier, rarely do players make the full value of a contract. The average is 68%
That puts him at 28 million a year off a 40 million per year contract value. You are not offering yourself flexibility or savings by tagging him. Tags are for players you are sure you want to keep, not guys you are “on the fence” with.
Riddle me this. Did our QB only make 68% of his last contract?

I think the numbers he is siting must include the final years of the contract as a whole when teams void them. And wrong, all money paid a QB hit the cap, it is just how and when they hit the cap.

Carr should have a incentive based contract:
20M guaranteed
5M if he doesn’t fumble more than 2x’s
5M if he throws more than 34 td’s
5M if he doesn’t throw more than 7 int’s
That way we pretty much guarantee he’ll be making no more than 20M

The Rams bet on themselves to use first round picks to win a Superbowl this year. They have a all star team but if Matt throws picks in the playoffs, I think they are 1 and done. I think the Rams should move on with Stafford after the season. Matt Stafford is a game manager QB like Jimmy G, Dak Prescott, and Geoff. Jared G got the Rams to the Superbowl, if Matt does not take them there and win, it is a waste.
Yup....
