That was fun to watch and very insightful. I thought the same thing watching it live. Mendo will love this info.

Ah yes, Tom Brady, the less than part-time superhero scout, admin, and apparently assistant coach is going to neuter the QB coach and OC for the five weeks he's available during the offseason. This weekend (and during the entire season) he was in the announcer's booth while everyone else was in the building, but sure, let him disrupt the new coaching staff by showing up for a few weeks before takin a private jet to the Bahamas.

Because the stuff we were doing before Brady was announced as being more involved going forward was working so well.Opoponax50 wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 9:53 am Ah yes, Tom Brady, the less than part-time superhero scout, admin, and apparently assistant coach is going to neuter the QB coach and OC for the five weeks he's available during the offseason. Exactly. We arent some model franchise bringing in Brady to stir the pot. We have been a terrible franchise for over 20 years. Maybe brady isnt any better but its only been one year and having hin involved certainly cant be worse.Attyla wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 10:10 am Because the stuff we were doing before Brady was announced as being more involved going forward was working so well.

To me it is pretty simple. We are drafting the QB of the future, how can it hurt to bring in the best to at least sit down with him and tell him how he went from college afterthought to the best of the best. If I am his QB coach, I am taking notes as well. Will it work? Who knows but from everything I have seen from Brady he is at least a nice guy so the conversations at least will be pleasant.DanKD wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 10:44 am Exactly. You're not neutering the QB coach and OC if you're focusing on ensuring that our QB has the best available coaching. I'm not even suggesting that Brady coach the guy, but the attention to detail is something I'm sure he'll ensure is there. Remember that Brady himself got outside coaching on mechanics from Tom House every year - a part time QB coach. I guess it sucks that Brady's coaching staff was neutuered on the way to a bunch of division titles and SB wins.

Also arent their rules to how much time coaches can spend with players? Not sure what the rules are for minority owners

There are very specific rules for coaches, I don't know about owners but my guess is that if there aren't specific rules then there will be rules soon if Brady starts to personally coach the QB.DanKD wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 11:11 am Also arent their rules to how much time coaches can spend with players? Who are you finding better than him for $1,145,000? You’re not. Also, even if you find an upgrade and pay them more cause you’ll have to, we don’t save much by cutting him. His value as a QB 3 at 1m is more than the roster spot. A potential injury to the most important position in the game could leave us in a bad way and end up trading picks for a Kenny Pickett who’s trash.

I keep beating this drum...... the backup QB position for this Raider team should be about who can help the starter, far more than who can step in in case of injury. 2026 is not a season where we're terrified that our starter missing a few games due to injury will crater our Super Bowl aspirations.
Anyone notice that Davis Webb is on interview lists for HC jobs? That's because he was cutting his teeth as what effectively amounts to an assistant coach while on rosters as a backup QB. I think it's safe to say that none of us knew that at the time. The beauty of having a backup QB be a de facto coach is that he's not limited in how much time he can spend with the starting QB - while actual coaches have to follow strict league rules.
Is O'Connell the right guy for that role? I don't know, but I leave it open as a possibility. I'm pretty sure that none of us know for sure that he isn't though.

Trubisky is a free agent, will be cheap and as a former high pick he can help Mendoza work through that aspect. He is better than O'Connell and his intangibles are there for us to use.TrueFan420 wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 1:35 pm Who are you finding better than him for $1,145,000? You’re not. What has made Trubisky be considered that IQ type QB and possibly a good QB coach/mentor? I'm not saying know, I' wasn't really aware of his knowledge here. Or just going with the Vet that has been around and should be cheap?Attyla wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 1:49 pm Trubisky is a free agent, will be cheap and as a former high pick he can help Mendoza work through that aspect. What I know I do want is what Brady mentioned during last offseason. Bill took me in a taught Tom everything about defense and that allowed him to know what they were running before the snap and it made him know where to go. His words, there's a segment all about this on the net and another about how a lot of coaches are cashing checks not really doing their job of teaching the game.
We want all of this and since he said it and is on our side, doing anything less would be stupid AF, that's the blueprint he himself has stated publicly. What needs to be done is to find that person who can train Mendoza the same way. That won't be a QB coach, we need a smart defense person to do this or Brady himself if one isn't available, assuming Bill isn't obtainable for the job. It's stupid doing anything less, he's the owner with said keys.
